چکیده

Dry matter intake (DMI) is the most important variable affecting animal performance (Waldo and Jorgensen, 1981). This is especially the case for beef cattle, considering their economic importance, their complex digestive systems and their particular metabolic functions (Forbes, 2007). Feed intake restrictions can prevent the fulfillment of nutritional requirements. As most of the nutrients in beef cattle diets are used to meet their maintenance requirements, small alterations in feed intake may lead to limitations in the efficiency of the productive processes. Consequently, the growth rate will decrease, the genetic potential for weight gain will not be reached and the profitability of livestock activities will be jeopardized. In addition, problems associated with feeding stress, health and digestive disorders may arise. The factors that control feed intake are complex and multi-factorial, and there is no consensus on how ruminants regulate this important activity (Forbes, 2007). Interactions between several factors, such as diet, animal, environment and management, are primarily responsible for the lack of accuracy in DMI prediction equations (McMenimam et al., 2009). To plan an efficient feeding program capable of providing the best feed formulation to meet nutritional requirements, it is necessary to predict the level of voluntary intake of growing beef cattle under ad libitum feeding with great precision and accuracy.

Growth, feed efficiency and variation of individually fed Angus, polled Hereford and Holstein steers.

Individual growth and feed intake of 36 Angus, 27 Polled Hereford and 30 Holstein steers were determined from 365 to 560 kg live weight. One-half of the cattle in each breed were fed a diet based on high-moisture ear corn and the other one-half were fed a diet based on corn silage. Within each breed X diet group, half of the cattle were implanted with zeranol. Cattle fed the high-moisture ear c...

Evaluation of the National Research Council (1996) dry matter intake prediction equations and relationships between intake and performance by feedlot cattle.

Intake prediction equations of NRC based on initial BW and dietary NE(m) concentration were evaluated with a commercial feedlot database consisting of 3,363 pen means collected from 3 feedlots over a 4-yr period. The DMI predicted by NRC equations had significant (P < 0.01) mean and linear biases across the range of observed DMI in the database. In general, DMI was overpredicted by the NRC equa...

Influence of substituting steam-flaked corn for dry rolled corn on feedlot cattle growth performance when cattle are allowed either ad libitum or restricted access to the finishing diet

OBJECTIVE The influence of substituting steam-flaked corn (SFC) for dry rolled corn (DRC) on feedlot cattle growth performance and dietary net energy when cattle are allowed either ad libitum or 2-h restricted access to the finishing diet was evaluated. METHODS Treatment effects were tested using 96 crossbred steers (251±2 kg) during the initial 56 d of the finishing phase. Cattle were blocke...

Characteristics and efficiency of fast-growing feedlot steers fed different dietary energy concentrations.

Most prediction equations of feedlot performance cover average daily gains (ADG) below 1.5 kg/d. The question is whether these equations would be accurate for higher ADG. Medium-to-large-framed weanling and yearling steer calves were fed individually using a transponder-electronic gate system in three feedlot trials and fed in groups in two trials. Average daily gain ranged from .9 to 2.1 kg. S...

Sulfur Toxicity in Feedlot Cattle

Introduction: Sulfur is an important component of many functions in the body and is an essential nutrient for beef cattle. It is an important part of the amino acids methionine, cysteine, and cystine. The B-vitamins thiamine and biotin also contain sulfur. Rumen microbes require sulfur for their normal growth and metabolism. A large portion of the sulfur found in typical feedlot diets is a comp...
